    About the Company The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) is dedicated to the protection and restoration of nature across Aotearoa. About the Role We are seeking a passionate individual to join our team in Whitianga as part of the new Marine District. This permanent, full-time position involves engaging with marine conservation efforts in the Tikapa Moana / Te Moananui-a-Toi / Hauraki Gulf Marine Park. In this vital role, you will support various conservation activities, including advocacy and enforcement as a DOC Warranted Officer. Your responsibilities will encompass community outreach, engagement, and advocacy for protected species and areas. You will collaborate with all workstreams within the Marine District, ensuring that advocacy and engagement strategies are effectively planned, delivered, and reviewed. Key areas of focus include: Community Advocacy: You will identify, plan, and execute outreach events aimed at raising public awareness about marine protection. Additionally, you will mentor our seasonal advocacy ranger program during peak summer months. Content Creation: You will create informative content that communicates the importance of marine protected areas and species. This may involve writing articles, blog posts, and capturing photography. Statutory Activities: You will provide advice to the District Leadership Team on concessions and permit applications, as well as monitor and report on existing permissions. Collaboration: Working closely with colleagues across various workstreams, you will contribute significantly to community engagement and advocacy efforts. Compliance: You will support conservation activities through advocacy and enforcement as a DOC Warranted Officer, ensuring the protection of species and areas. You will also guide those seeking permits for various activities. This role requires resilience and the ability to maintain composure under pressure, as your audience may not always agree with your message. Flexibility in your schedule is essential, as weekend and public holiday work may be required, along with the possibility of traveling away from home for multiple days. Please note that successful candidates must pass both Police Vetting and Ministry of Justice Checks. Requirements We are eager to hear from candidates who possess some of the following skills and experience: - Strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals and resolve conflicts while maintaining composure. - Excellent organizational and event planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. - Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, including experience in report writing and simplifying complex themes. - Strong time management skills, enabling you to prioritize tasks and maintain accuracy while meeting deadlines. - A broad understanding of conservation legislation and its significance for New Zealand's future sustainability. - Cultural awareness, particularly in relation to Te Ao Māori. - Flexibility to undertake additional tasks as required by DOC and to adapt to changing needs. - Skills in content creation, including photography and creative writing. - A commitment to marine sustainability and alignment with Te Papa Atawhai's principles. - A tertiary qualification in conservation, communications, or a related field. - A full New Zealand driving license, with the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
