About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist (Senior Medical Officer) to join our Mental Health Emergency Department (MH/ED) team, serving across the Wellington and Hutt Hospital Emergency Departments.
This senior position offers a unique opportunity to provide expert psychiatric assessment and intervention in a fast-paced emergency environment. You will be instrumental in delivering high-quality, culturally safe, and person and whanau-centred care to individuals experiencing acute mental health challenges or psychological distress.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with emergency department clinicians, MHAIDS teams, and community partners to facilitate rapid and effective care planning, reduce avoidable admissions, and support safe transitions for patients.
About the Team/Service/Location
Our MH/ED team is a vibrant, multidisciplinary service operating across Wellington and Hutt Hospitals. We are dedicated to providing rapid, person-centred care for individuals in crisis, while fostering integration between emergency and mental health services.
As part of our growing team, which includes a nurse practitioner (intern) and specialty clinical nurses, you will contribute to improving access, equity, and outcomes for tangata whaiora and their whanau.

About You
We seek a candidate who is:
- Vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and holds FRANZCP or an equivalent qualification that allows for vocational registration with the MCNZ.
- Experienced in acute psychiatric assessment, crisis intervention, psychopharmacology, and risk management.
- Knowledgeable about Te Tiriti o Waitangi and committed to equitable, culturally safe practices.
- A proven leader with strong collaboration skills in multidisciplinary settings.
- Able to navigate complex and dynamic situations using initiative and sound judgement.
