About the Role
We are looking for a motivated, compassionate, and experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our haematology multi-disciplinary team. This is a fixed-term, part-time position of 72 hours per fortnight to cover parental leave for a duration of 12 months.
In this role, you will utilize your advanced nursing skills to care for patients with complex malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. You will collaborate with a dedicated team that includes Consultant Haematologists and other senior nursing staff, focusing on patients with chronic haematological conditions such as:
- Cancers, including myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), myelofibrosis, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), and other low-grade lymphoproliferative disorders.
- Autoimmune conditions, such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), autoimmune haematolytic anaemia (AIHA), and aplastic anaemia.
- Congenital disorders, including haemoglobinopathies.
You will also play a key role in implementing local and national initiatives, fostering strong relationships within Health NZ, Te Whatu Ora, and Waikato.
Key Responsibilities of the Role
- Deliver advanced, evidence-based nursing care in both inpatient and outpatient haematology settings.
- Provide support and care coordination for patients with haematological conditions, guiding them through the health system from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up.
- Educate patients and their whanau about their haematological diagnoses and proposed treatments.
- Serve as a direct point of contact for patients and their whanau regarding issues related to their conditions.
- Conduct nurse-led follow-up clinics at Waikato Hospital under the supervision of a Consultant Haematologist.
- Contribute to quality initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and service development.
- Engage in relevant research opportunities within the field of haematology.
- Act as a clinical resource and role model for nursing, allied health staff, and junior medical staff.
- Participate in ongoing professional development in haematology care.
About the Service
Our Haematology service at Waikato Hospital specializes in diagnosing and managing diseases related to blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissues. We provide comprehensive care for both malignant and non-malignant conditions, including thrombotic and bleeding disorders, across inpatient, outpatient, and day-stay settings. Our multi-disciplinary team includes 11 Consultant Haematologists, 7 Registrars, 2 House Officers, 1 Nurse Practitioner, 6 Clinical Nurse Specialists, and administrative staff.
We are committed to advanced patient care outcomes through diverse treatment options, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, autologous stem cell transplantation, and supportive care. Our team is also actively involved in clinical trials.

About You
To be successful in this role, you should have:
- A current New Zealand Annual Practicing Certificate.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a New Zealand hospital.
- A postgraduate certificate in a relevant field.
- Some knowledge and/or experience in haematology.
- Proficiency in implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice.
- A full, clean New Zealand driver's license.
