About the Company
Ara Poutama Aotearoa is committed to the wellness and well-being of the people we serve. Our mission is to assist those in our care to reach their full potential while ensuring the safety and health of our communities and families. We are dedicated to reducing re-offending and enhancing community safety through a values-led approach. Our core principles—leadership, respect, spirituality, guardianship, and relationships—guide our actions and shape our strategic outcomes outlined in our strategy, Hokai Rangi.
We are in an exciting phase of growth and actively seek talented individuals who are passionate about contributing to an inclusive and vibrant workplace. We celebrate the unique contributions of each individual and value the diverse talents within our team.
About the Role
We are currently looking for Corrections Officers to join our dedicated team at Arohata Women’s Prison. As one of three women's prisons in New Zealand, Arohata is focused on addressing the unique needs of women in our care. Our Women's Strategy, "Wahine: E Rere Ana Ki te Pae Hou," outlines our commitment to a gender-specific, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach.
In this role, you will manage the health and well-being of the women at our facility. We acknowledge that the needs of the women we serve differ from those of men, and we have developed an approach that provides comprehensive care, treatment, support, and encouragement to help them build better futures for themselves and their families.
Requirements
We are looking for individuals who:
- Can establish meaningful relationships, communicate effectively, and listen empathetically.
- Are motivated to make a positive impact in their community.
- Are inspired by the opportunity to change lives.
- Value integrity and demonstrate it in their daily actions.
- Have experience in a Kaupapa Maori environment or a willingness to learn (this is desirable but not essential).
In addition to these qualities, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Hold the legal right to work in New Zealand. We prioritize candidates who already possess this right, and we may not be able to support visa applications for this role.
- Have a Full New Zealand Driver Licence (holders of a Full International Licence may also apply).
- Be medically fit for employment and complete a Medical Assessment and Physical Readiness Assessment.
Benefits
We offer a starting salary of $67,519, with opportunities for salary increases as you achieve national qualifications (Level 3 at $72,197, and Level 4 at $77,713).
Career progression is available, with pathways leading to Senior Corrections Officer, Principal Corrections Officer, and Tier 5 Manager positions. Our collective agreement ensures fair compensation, including overtime rates and shift allowances.
You will also have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community. We encourage participation in various events and support networks, fostering a strong sense of belonging. Additionally, you will have the chance to attain NZQA qualifications at Levels 3 and 4 as part of your role, and we will provide you with a full uniform.
Training will begin with a one-week induction at Arohata Women's Prison, followed by five weeks of training at our National Training Centre in Trentham, Wellington, and then four weeks back at Arohata before graduation. Your learning journey will continue as you grow in this rewarding role.
If you are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of women and their families, we encourage you to apply and join our team at Arohata Women’s Prison.
