The Salvation Army operates over 130 Family Stores across the country, providing a platform for selling a diverse range of quality donated goods, including clothing, furniture, linens, and homeware. Our stores are not typical retail environments; each day brings unique experiences with customers, donations, and interesting items to process and price.
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team, where you will play a vital role in ensuring the success of our stores. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver an exceptional experience for both customers and donors, encouraging repeat visits.
As a customer service all-rounder, you will need a keen eye for detail and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced retail environment with a high volume of stock. Your daily tasks will vary, from serving and greeting customers and donors on the shop floor to working in the stock processing area.
Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work closely with your colleagues to achieve our shared goals and targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver outstanding customer service to both customers and donors
- Receive, sort, price, and merchandise donated goods
- Process sales and manage general money handling, ensuring accuracy during end-of-day cash ups
- Maintain a well-presented, well-stocked, and tidy store environment
- Adhere to policies and standard operating procedures, including health and safety and audit controls
- Contribute to a positive team culture and perform general duties as needed within the Family Stores
Requirements
- Excellent customer service skills with sound judgment and the ability to de-escalate situations when necessary
- Resilient and positive team player who can relate to individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Physically fit and capable of regular lifting, as this is a daily requirement of the role
- Proficient in using various retail and communication technologies, including point of sale software and tablets
- Self-managing with the ability to stay focused and re-prioritize tasks under pressure
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ethical and respectful approach to work, building trust within the Family Stores and upholding the values of The Salvation Army
- Comfortable working within established procedures while also exercising sound judgment when initiative is needed
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand; all employment offers are contingent upon a satisfactory Ministry of Justice clearance/police check

This is a permanent, part-time role offering 12 hours per week. Please note that Family Stores operate on some public holidays, and flexibility will be required to cover annual leave and sickness as needed.
The hourly rate for this position is $26 per hour.
