    About the Company At Antarctica New Zealand, we are dedicated to supporting world-class scientific research and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Scott Base serves as the central hub for New Zealand's operations in Antarctica, and each year we employ seasonal staff to manage base activities and support scientific endeavors in the field. About the Role We are seeking a Field Mechanic to join our team as we continue to facilitate critical climate research at a remote field camp located 1100 km from Scott Base. This role requires a talented and versatile individual who can contribute across a range of operational areas. As a member of our diverse and motivated team, you will work in one of the most dynamic environments on Earth. The Southbound Traverse Team is responsible for the preparation and delivery of the outbound traverse from Scott Base to the field camp, as well as the establishment of the camp itself. The Camp Support Team manages overall camp operations, ensuring the completion of scientific objectives, the demobilization of resources at the end of the season, and the northbound traverse back to Scott Base. As a Field Mechanic, your primary responsibilities will include the preparation, maintenance, repair, and operation of traverse and camp equipment, such as Pisten Bully machines, fuel systems, and sleds. Your role is vital in ensuring safe and efficient operations for both the traverse and field camp. Key Responsibilities Include - Preparing, maintaining, repairing, and operating vehicles and equipment supporting deep field traverse and camp operations. - Ensuring all mechanical equipment is safe, fit for purpose, and maintained according to operational parameters and environmental conditions. - Demonstrating and ensuring field personnel possess the competencies required to operate and maintain traverse equipment safely in remote locations. - Coordinating and preparing cargo loads, including camp, scientific, and fuel infrastructure for deployment to the field. - Supporting data collection and maintenance of equipment for scientific research projects. - Preparing, organizing, storing, and utilizing fuel safely in accordance with Antarctica New Zealand policies and procedures. - Conducting traverse operations in line with Antarctica New Zealand procedures and adhering to permitted activities outlined in the environmental impact assessment. - At the end of the season, ensuring vehicles and equipment are serviced and stored properly, with updated service and usage records. About You We are looking for a highly motivated Field Mechanic to join our close-knit, hardworking team. Experience in supporting remote camps and multi-week vehicle traverses is highly desirable. Skills and Experience Include - A New Zealand Trade Certificate or a recognized equivalent in Automotive Engineering. - A current Class 1 and 2 New Zealand driver's license with W, T, R endorsements (Unit Standards 16701, 16703, 16702) or equivalent. - Competency in maintaining, repairing, and operating Pisten Bully machines and attachments such as tillers and Hiab cranes. - Holding Unit Standards for truck loader/Hiab cranes (US 16617 or 3795) and slinging regular loads safely (30072). - Knowledge and competency in bulk fueling equipment, operations, and spill prevention and response. - A current first aid certificate (US 6401 or 6402) or preferably a Pre-Hospital Trauma certificate. - Experience living and working effectively in small, remote teams under challenging conditions.
