About the Role
We are seeking a Registered Early Childhood Teacher with a strong knowledge of child development to join our dynamic team as a Hospital Play Specialist. This full-time position, based at Christchurch Health Campus (Waipapa Hospital), offers a rewarding opportunity to support the health and well-being of our young patients in a vibrant hospital environment.
In this role, you will be responsible for working in our licensed early childhood service, The Activity Room, as well as throughout the pediatric wards. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to assist pepe, tamariki, rangatahi, and their whanau in navigating the hospital system. By utilizing the power of play, you will help minimize the stress and anxiety associated with hospitalization, build coping strategies, and create opportunities for participation in healthcare activities.
Your expertise will be invaluable in ensuring that children feel supported during their time in the hospital.
About You
We are looking for candidates with experience in hospital play, although we also welcome qualified early childhood teachers with a Level 7 qualification who believe they possess the necessary skills.
Key skills and attributes we are seeking include:
- The ability to adapt and work effectively with diverse individuals and groups
- Excellent knowledge of child development
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Warm and sensitive interpersonal skills to relate to children and families
- Quick rapport-building abilities with tamariki and whanau
- Proficiency in psychosocial assessment tools for children
- Competence in te ao Maori, tikanga, and te reo Maori, or a commitment to starting your journey in these areas
- Clear and confident communication skills
- Creativity and a fun-loving spirit
- Strong self-care skills and a reflective practice approach
- Confidence with IT skills
- A supportive team player with a growth mindset
