About the Role
We are currently seeking a Cardiologist or a General Medicine Physician with a subspecialty in Cardiology to join our team at Taranaki Base Hospital for a fixed-term period of 12 months. This position offers both full-time and part-time options to support planned leave within our Department of Medicine.
As part of our cardiology service, you will be involved in a range of clinical activities, including:
- Echocardiography
- Exercise treadmill testing
- Transoesophageal echocardiography
- Ambulatory cardiac monitoring
- Operating within a diagnostic angiography laboratory
Our integrated cardiac network enables those with interventional skills to perform procedures at other regional centers. Additionally, you will participate in monthly cardiology clinics in Hawera, with frequency negotiable based on your preferences.
About You
To succeed in this role, you will hold (or be eligible for) vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. We are looking for candidates who bring the following qualifications and attributes:
- Experience in an acute hospital setting
- Strong teamwork, communication, and leadership abilities
- A commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care
- A proactive, collaborative approach with a focus on continuous improvement
- Competence in temporary pacing wires and pericardial drains
In this role, you will engage in various responsibilities, including:
- Delivering cardiology services for both inpatient and outpatient care
- Teaching and mentoring basic and advanced trainees, medical students, nursing, and allied health staff
- Participating in continued professional development, audits, and service improvement initiatives
Desirable qualifications include experience in cardiac imaging techniques such as echocardiography, cardiac CT, and/or cardiac MRI.
Our Service Region
Taranaki Base Hospital is a modern secondary hospital equipped with strong clinical support services, including Intensivists, Interventional Radiology, and diagnostic imaging. You will work alongside supportive professionals, including:
- Cardiologists (both in-house and locum)
- Nurse Practitioners
- Clinical Nurse Specialists
- Cardiac Sonographers and Physiologists
- Cardiology outpatient nursing and support staff
We maintain close collaborative relationships with Waikato Hospital for interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and cardiothoracic surgery, as well as Auckland City Hospital for Adult Congenital Heart Disease.
