About the Role We are pleased to offer a unique opportunity for nursing professionals eager to advance their careers in Radiation Oncology. We are launching a new two-year Nurse Practitioner Candidate program, with the first cohort beginning in January 2026. In the first year, candidates will gain specialized knowledge and clinical experience within the Radiation Oncology field, collaborating closely with our clinical teams and participating in the RANZCR Radiation Oncology Training Program. This year also allows for the continuation of postgraduate master’s degree education if desired. In the second year, candidates will complete the Nurse Practitioner Training Programme (NPTP), which includes the final academic year necessary for Nurse Practitioner registration. This year will include protected clinical and non-clinical time dedicated to mentorship and the consolidation of clinical skills, diagnostic reasoning, critical analysis, and clinical prescribing. Key Responsibilities - Conducting First Specialist Appointments under supervision for patients and whanau with cancer diagnoses within an identified patient group. - Leading on-treatment review clinics under supervision for patients undergoing radiotherapy, facilitating the assessment and management of treatment-related side effects. - Assessing and managing patients presenting acutely unwell due to their cancer diagnosis or treatment-related toxicities under supervision. - Evaluating out-of-town patients who present for radiotherapy with exacerbations of pre-existing medical conditions. - Overseeing follow-up clinics under supervision for patients post-radiotherapy treatment and referring them to appropriate services. - Supporting the multi-disciplinary Radiation Oncology team, including nursing staff, radiation therapists, radiation oncologists, registrars, and allied health team members. About the Service The Radiation Oncology Department is part of the Canterbury Regional Cancer and Haematology Service, located on the lower ground floor of Christchurch Hospital. About You We are looking for candidates who possess strong interpersonal skills and a genuine ability to build effective relationships, with a focus on patient care. Essential qualifications and experience include: - Experience in oncology or with cancer patients within an acute setting. - A commitment to promoting nursing research, education, and evidence-based practice. - Excellent organizational skills and the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals. - A relevant postgraduate qualification. - Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and a valid Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
