    Role: Rural Specialist / Emergency Medicine Specialist (FACEM) / Senior Medical Officer We are currently offering flexible positions for a Rural Specialist, Emergency Medicine Specialist, or Senior Medical Officer. These roles can be permanent, full-time, part-time, or fixed-term, providing an excellent opportunity for professionals seeking a diverse work experience. About the Role We are seeking a passionate and skilled Rural Medicine Specialist to join our dedicated team in providing emergency and inpatient care to the Taumarunui community. In this role, you will encounter a variety of presentations in our emergency department and on the inpatient ward, delivering a high standard of emergency and ongoing care independently. Key responsibilities include: - Executing proficient preventive, therapeutic, and diagnostic interventions. - Performing both diagnostic and therapeutic procedural skills effectively. - Consulting with health professionals at our tertiary hospital as necessary within your expertise. - Establishing rapport and ethical therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. - Accurately gathering and synthesizing relevant information from patients, families, and other healthcare professionals. About the Team/Service This role offers an excellent balance for those who enjoy working with acute patient cases and facilitating care through assessment, treatment, transfer, or admission. Our service emphasizes collaboration and continuous improvement, fostering a vibrant and cooperative work environment where employees can thrive. Senior medical officer support is readily available, providing new staff with ample opportunities to gain emergency procedural experience and advance their careers. Senior medical officers can attend up to two weeks of fully funded medical education and are entitled to six weeks of annual leave as needed. Taumarunui Hospital sees approximately 10,000 presentations per year in its emergency department and features a 10-bed inpatient ward. Our facilities include on-site plain film radiology and laboratory services available during the day, with on-call support 24/7. We also have an independent primary care General Practice on-site, alongside visiting specialists from Waikato Hospital providing specialist outpatient clinics. Additionally, there is a two-bed primary birthing unit run by an employed charge midwife manager and midwives. About Taumarunui Taumarunui Hospital plays a crucial role in providing 24/7 emergency services and supports high-acuity patients through air and road ambulance retrievals to Waikato Hospital for complex care. The hospital also offers various specialty outpatient clinics with senior visiting doctors and general laboratory and radiology diagnostics. With a growing number of nurse-led services, Taumarunui Hospital adheres to the Integrated Health Care model, developed in collaboration with local communities and primary health services to ensure coordinated patient care. Located in the heart of the North Island, Taumarunui serves as an ideal base for outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled along the Adventure Highway, the town provides access to some of New Zealand's most stunning landscapes, including views of Mt. Ruapehu and the tranquil Wanganui River. It is also the gateway to Whanganui National Park, Tongariro National Park, and the Pureora Timber Trail, offering endless opportunities for outdoor activities such as canoeing, jetboating, fishing, mountain biking, and scenic walks. Taumarunui seamlessly combines natural beauty with adventure, making it the perfect location for those looking to grow their careers while enjoying an active, outdoor lifestyle. About You To be considered for this position, you should be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Ideally, you will be a Fellow of the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine or FACEM (or possess an equivalent overseas qualification) with a strong ability to manage ongoing care.
