About the Role We are seeking an individual with exceptional relationship management skills to lead the protection efforts for the nationally critical Chatham Island oystercatcher during the 2025-26 breeding season. This role combines strategic planning with field-based management and monitoring, making it an excellent chance for someone looking to enhance their expertise in managing critically threatened species. In this position, you will be responsible for: - Developing a work plan to execute the Chatham Island oystercatcher breeding season program for 2025-26. - Implementing a landscape-scale predator trapping network to expand the area under sustained predator control. - Conducting pre-breeding and post-breeding surveys on both Chatham and Pitt Islands. - Completing a full population census of the oystercatcher on Chatham Island. - Building and maintaining relationships with landowners to secure access permissions. - Monitoring nests and assessing productivity throughout the breeding season. - Relocating oystercatcher nests from flood-prone areas as necessary. - Creating a protection strategy for the Pitt Island oystercatcher population. - Contributing to the development or execution of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) preparedness and response plans. - Organizing an end-of-season debrief and preparing a summary report. Requirements If you possess some of the following skills and experience, we would love to hear from you: - Strong relationship management abilities - LUV competency - 4WD competency - Current First Aid Certificate - Experience with trail cameras - Expertise in data collection Desirable qualifications include: - Firearms license - Experience with both live capture and kill traps - Contractor management experience - GPS navigation skills - Experience in banding oystercatchers or other waders Even if you do not meet all the criteria but feel that your skills align closely with this role, we encourage you to apply. The salary for this position ranges from $68,535 to $85,423, with the starting salary based on the successful applicant’s relevant skills and experience. The Chathams Wairarapa Team will cover your flights within New Zealand, as well as return flights to the Chatham Islands.
