Description
About the Company
At Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, we are committed to providing outstanding healthcare services to our communities. Our focus is on achieving the best health outcomes for our patients, which begins with expecting excellence from ourselves. We are currently seeking a dedicated Medical Registrar trainee to join our accredited basic and advanced physician training program at Whangarei Hospital.
We offer six months of advanced training in Geriatric Medicine, twelve months of advanced training in General Medicine, and two years of basic medical training. Our environment is designed to foster professional growth, allowing you to make a meaningful impact in your community while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
About the Role
The Department of Health of Older People offers a comprehensive range of services, including acute care for the elderly, acute stroke care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient and community services. Northland has one of the highest rates of acute stroke in the country, and we operate a ten-bed Acute Stroke Unit.
As a Medical Registrar, your primary focus will be the assessment and management of patients of all ages presenting with acute stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). You will work closely with your Consultant, providing an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills and expand your clinical practice. You will learn about initial assessment and management techniques, including thrombolysis and clot retrieval, and will have the chance to attend a weekly neurology clinic. Additionally, you will participate in the acute medicine on-call roster and gain experience in other specialties such as Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, Oncology, Respiratory, and Gastroenterology.
We pride ourselves on providing close supervision for our trainees in inpatient, community, and outpatient settings, with a strong commitment to education. You will have the opportunity to teach medical students from Auckland University through our active clinical training program, which includes didactic sessions, interactive teaching, journal clubs, and video conferencing of RACP lectures. There is also the possibility to participate in the Northern Regional Geriatric Medicine Journal Club in Auckland.
