About the Company Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and aims to provide quality healthcare to all New Zealanders. We are focused on creating a health system built on collaboration, equity, sustainability, and a whanau-centered approach. Our goal is to achieve excellence in service delivery. About the Role We are seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with a strong interest in working with older adults. In this role, you will primarily support clients with dementia who exhibit significant behavioral and psychological symptoms, as well as older individuals experiencing late-onset, moderate to severe mental health issues or chronic mental illnesses coupled with physical frailty. You will have the opportunity to engage in service improvement initiatives and contribute to the professional development of medical and health practitioners through teaching and mentoring. Our team provides peer review, informal supervision, and collegial support, fostering a collaborative working environment. You will work alongside two other Psychiatrists and a dedicated team of senior nursing and allied health professionals, employing a case-management model. Services are delivered on an outpatient and community basis, with referrals to specialist inpatient wards as needed. This is a permanent, part-time position at 0.6 FTE, with opportunities to increase hours within the wider mental health service. There is no requirement for after-hours on-call unless you wish to participate. About the Team/Service/Location You will be joining a cohesive and experienced multidisciplinary team that is passionate about enhancing health outcomes and improving the quality of life for older adults and their families. The Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) service includes Psychiatrists specializing in older age, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Community Psychiatric Nurses, and a Nurse Practitioner. Our OPMH service primarily provides care in community settings and outpatient facilities, with the Consultant Psychiatrists also admitting patients to a limited number of inpatient Psychogeriatric beds within an Older Persons and Rehabilitation ward. Additionally, we offer consult services to acute physical health wards at Hutt Hospital and collaborate closely with geriatric medicine and other mental health services across the district. The Capital, Coast, and Hutt Valley district is centrally located in Wellington and employs over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the largest employers in the region. Our facilities include Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital, Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua, and the Kapiti Health Centre in Paraparaumu. About You The ideal candidate will be vocationally registered in Psychiatry with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and hold either FRANZCP or an equivalent qualification. You should be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Certification or additional training in Psychiatry of Old Age is desirable, along with relevant experience and training.
