    Description

Location: Predominantly at Hutt Hospital, with additional responsibilities across various hospitals in the district, including regional clinics. Service: Plastic Surgery Contract: Permanent, part-time/full-time (0.8 FTE - 1 FTE) Salary: As per ASMS SECA About the Company Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is dedicated to serving all New Zealanders, firmly rooted in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We are actively engaged in building a health system that emphasizes partnership, equity, sustainability, whānau-centered care, and excellence through integration and collaboration. About the Role We are seeking a dedicated professional for a permanent position within our plastic surgery service. This role will primarily focus on general plastic surgery while also providing subspecialty expertise in the management of vascular anomalies and cleft lip and palate. The monthly schedule will include subspecialty clinics for skin management, including "see and treat" clinics, alongside general plastic surgery clinics. The position will also require attending a monthly out-of-town clinic at a regional hospital. You will have operative access for elective care, balanced with planned acute lists, and will contribute to the on-call roster (currently 1:10). The role includes participation in the developing surgeon of the day model of care, with operating lists assigned across main theatres and the newly opened local anaesthetic procedure suite. In this position, you will support and lead junior medical staff, actively participate in interdisciplinary team education, and engage in bi-monthly burns multidisciplinary team meetings. You will also contribute to quality improvement initiatives, clinical audit activities, and service development discussions. About the Team/Service/Location The Wellington Regional Plastic Maxillo-Facial and Burn Service is based in Lower Hutt, Wellington. We provide regional services to the Capital and Coast, Wairarapa, Mid Central, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson/Marlborough, and Whanganui areas, serving a population of over 1 million people. Our service includes outreach clinics in each of these regions to enhance patient access. Currently, our team consists of around 12 plastic surgery consultants and 12 junior doctors of varying grades. We are committed to delivering high-quality care to plastic surgical patients facing a diverse range of acute and elective surgical conditions. Our services include a variety of plastic surgical procedures, with a strong focus on increasing access to treatment for skin cancer patients. Hutt Hospital is home to the central region's Regional Burns Unit, one of three regional units collaborating with the National Burns Centre in Middlemore, Auckland, to provide a comprehensive National Burns Service. Established pathways allow for the seamless transfer of patients between national and regional units based on complexity and demand. Consultants currently participate in a 1:10 surgical on-call roster, and we are in the process of implementing a new surgeon of the day model. This presents an exciting opportunity to utilize our new multidisciplinary local anaesthetic procedure suite for consultant-led local anaesthetic hand and skin surgeries. The Capital, Coast, and Hutt Valley district is centrally located in Wellington and employs over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the region. We operate three hospitals: Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital, and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua, as well as the Kapiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu. About You We are looking for candidates who are vocationally registered in Plastic Reconstructive Surgery with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and hold an FRACS or equivalent qualification, with the ability to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ. You should have a keen interest and recent experience in all aspects of general plastic surgery, with the competence to manage a wide range of conditions, both acutely and electively. Expertise in the management of vascular anomalies and cleft lip and palate is essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Relevant experience and training in this field will be highly regarded.
