About the Company
Massey University is a prestigious, Tiriti-led institution renowned for its commitment to excellence in agricultural education and research. Within the School of Agriculture and Environment, Massey Agricultural & Horticultural Enterprises (MAHE) serves as a vital business unit. We manage over 2,000 hectares of farmland across eight budget centres, which include dairy, sheep and beef, deer, and horticultural operations. These enterprises support our teaching, research, extension, and industry engagement efforts.
About the Role
We are currently seeking an experienced and visionary General Manager to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for our MAHE units. In this role, you will report directly to the Head of School and manage a team of dedicated farm and professional staff. You will play a crucial role in ensuring that our farm operations align with Massey’s academic, research, and commercial objectives.
Your responsibilities will encompass various areas, including farm performance, staff development, health and safety, financial planning, innovation, and stakeholder engagement. Your leadership will be instrumental in keeping Massey’s land-based enterprises at the forefront of agricultural practice and education.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in agriculture, science, or business, or equivalent experience in farm leadership.
- A minimum of five years of experience managing multi-site farm operations.
- Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
- A comprehensive understanding of practical farming and strategic planning.
- Proven financial and business acumen, including experience in developing three-year business plans.
- Familiarity with farm systems data, regulatory compliance, and health and safety best practices.
