About the Role
We invite you to join our surgical team at Dunedin Hospital, located in the vibrant city of Dunedin, home to the prestigious Otago Medical School and the University of Otago. In this role, you will work across a variety of surgical specialties and subspecialties, gaining exposure to a diverse range of cases, including tertiary level caseloads.
Our department offers strong educational support, including weekly teaching sessions, case discussions, journal clubs, and peer review meetings. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to engage in research as part of their training, further enhancing their professional development.
The surgical specialties available include:
- General Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery
- Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, and Oesophagogastric Surgery
- Acute Surgical Care
- Vascular Surgery
- Breast Surgery
- Plastics
- Urology
- Neurosurgery
Additionally, there may be opportunities for rotations in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) every six months. Our department maintains a unionized after-hours roster, comprising 21 Registrars in rotation. The specific runs available will depend on your start date.
About You
Our ideal candidate will possess:
- Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or eligibility for general or provisional general registration with the Council. You can verify your eligibility by visiting the Council's website.
- An interest in pursuing a surgical career or obtaining surgical experience to further your career aspirations. Our surgical RMO management team collaborates closely with Registrars to support their career goals.
- We welcome applications from RMOs with less than two years of experience who plan to apply for the 2025 training year; please indicate this in your application.
- It is a requirement of the Medical Council of New Zealand that your qualifications be verified through EPIC. If you are committed to working in New Zealand, we recommend starting this process as soon as possible to ensure timely registration.

Salary Range
This position falls under the terms set forth by the New Zealand Resident Doctors' Association and the 20 DHB Multi Employer Collective Agreement (NZRDA SECA) for the period from June 18, 2024, to July 31, 2026, along with the Specialty Trainees of New Zealand and the 20 District Health Boards Multi Employer Collective Agreement (STONZ SECA) from February 14, 2024, to February 28, 2026.
