At Otago University, the Campus and Collegiate Life Services Division is dedicated to providing world-class services that enrich the unique Otago experience and foster the collegiate spirit of our institution. Our College Catering team is a large-scale food service operation that serves over 8,500 meals daily to eleven University Colleges.
About the Role
We are currently seeking a Senior Chef to join our dynamic University College food service team. This hands-on position will involve the production of high-quality meals and the supervision of staff. We are looking for an effective leader who possesses the vision and work ethic necessary to maintain and enhance our already high-performing food service.
Your Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will be a hospitality professional with a diverse background in food service, complemented by strong communication and team-building skills. Specifically, we are looking for candidates who have:
- Previous experience in the hospitality industry
- Preferably a fully qualified Chef (City of London Guilds or equivalent)
- A strong customer service focus
- Outstanding communication skills
- Experience operating a food safety program
- A track record of delivering high-quality, varied, and nutritious meals, while accommodating special dietary needs
It is essential for the successful applicant to demonstrate a high level of competency and the ability to work collaboratively within a team. The candidate should also be capable of fostering mutual respect between our primary customers and staff.
Further Details
This is a permanent, full-time position that operates only during the academic semester (38 weeks a year, from February to November), located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The work schedule consists of 40 hours per week, with 10-hour shifts from Saturday through Tuesday. The position is set to commence in February 2026.
The hourly pay range for this role is between $31.84 and $33.34, with the potential to reach $34.84 per hour at the top of the range. Additionally, the University offers catering staff summer maintenance work as a Trades Assistant for those interested in employment outside the academic year (from November to February).
While this position will initially be based in University College, there may be opportunities for relocation to another College on the Dunedin campus, if necessary.
