    Description

About the Company Join Ara Poutama Aotearoa - the Department of Corrections, where our mission is to enhance public safety and reduce re-offending while addressing the overrepresentation of Māori in correctional facilities. We are a values-led organization, guided by principles such as leadership, respect, spirituality, guardianship, and relationships, to achieve our Hokai Rangi strategy. We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. About the Role As an Instructor for Pig, Sheep, and Cattle at Christchurch Men's Prison, you will play a vital role in helping individuals in prison develop essential skills in the farming industry. Our prison industries provide meaningful engagement and equip incarcerated individuals with valuable work experience that enhances their chances of successful reintegration into society. In this position, you will provide direct supervision and practical training to men on a working farm, with a primary focus on the piggery. Your responsibilities will include the day-to-day management of the property, working closely with men employed on the farm, and training them in practical skills that promote positive change upon their release. By instilling good working habits, you will contribute to rehabilitation and reintegration efforts, ultimately supporting our goal of reducing offending and fostering safer communities. The role requires a standard shift of 80 hours per fortnight, working Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. You may also be required to work on public holidays and be available for potential overtime or callouts. Seasonal work, typical in farming environments, may also be part of your responsibilities. Instructors hold the same classification as Corrections Officers and complete the same initial training courses. This includes on-site training and residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, focusing on the custodial aspects of the position. For a more in-depth discussion about the working farm environment at Christchurch Men's Prison, feel free to contact Warren Chilton directly at 021 769 959. Requirements To be a successful candidate, it is highly desirable that you possess the following skills and experience: - Experience working with livestock and general farm equipment, particularly in a piggery setting. - Strong communication skills with the ability to motivate and engage others. - Capability to share knowledge in a hands-on learning environment tailored for adult learners. - Experience or a willingness to work within a Kaupapa Māori or Pasifika context. - A full New Zealand driver’s license or eligibility to obtain one. - A commitment to workplace health and safety practices. - Experience as an Adult Educator or NZAQ Assessor (4098) is advantageous. Please note that the later stages of the recruitment process will involve pre-employment checks, including a drug test, medical examination, physical assessment, and police vetting. This Criminal History Check is exempt from the Clean Slate Act, so all offenses, even those older than seven years, must be declared in your application. Benefits The starting salary for this position ranges from $72,514 to $80,876 per annum. Your appointment and salary will reflect your relevant skills and experience. Once in the role, there are opportunities to increase your salary over time, potentially reaching up to $90,322. Apply Now We invite you to submit your application through our careers site to ensure transparency—applications received via email will not be considered. When applying, please include a tailored CV and a cover letter that outlines your motivation for joining our department, highlighting your relevant skills and experience, and how they align with our mission. Applications close on Monday, September 22, 2025.
