Description
About the Company
Tradestaff Global is currently seeking expressions of interest from qualified and experienced Structural Steel Welders to join us on a significant new-build commercial construction project at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Our deployment is scheduled for September to October 2025, and we are excited to bring dedicated professionals on board for this unique opportunity.
About the Role
In this role, you will be responsible for assembling and welding large steel framing as part of a dynamic construction team. Previous hands-on experience in erecting large steel structures is essential. We value teamwork, so you will also be expected to support other trades and assist with general laboring tasks as needed.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:
- Vaccinations: You must be willing to receive vaccinations for Flu, Tdap, and MMR.
- Qualifications: You should be a trade-qualified structural steel welder with a current 9606 ticket. If your ticket has expired, we may assist with re-certification. Please clearly indicate the status of your 9606 ticket in your application.
- Experience: A strong background in large structural steel erection is required.
- Documentation: Proof of qualifications (current or expired) will be required during the interview process.
- Resume: A detailed, up-to-date CV outlining your skills, experience, and project history is necessary.
- Technical Skills: You should be comfortable working with detailed paperwork and computer systems.
- Patience: The application and mobilization process is thorough and can take several months to complete.
We are looking for team players with a positive attitude who are ready to contribute to a hardworking and supportive team environment.
Please note that this role is physically demanding and requires excellent fitness. You should be prepared for long hours, extreme weather conditions, and fast-paced work, all of which are part of daily life on the Ice.
Benefits
We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:
- Flights provided from any major New Zealand airport.
- Food, shared accommodation, and travel insurance fully covered.
- An excellent pay rate of NZ$73.64 per hour (contracting rate, paid fortnightly).
- All personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied.
This is challenging work in one of the most remote locations on Earth. For the right individual, it presents an unforgettable opportunity to experience Antarctica while being well-compensated for your efforts.
Expected Hours
You can expect to work approximately 54 hours per week, with a schedule of 6 days out of 7. Your hours will remain consistent, even if weather conditions impact operations.
Approximate Dates
Deployment is anticipated in September or October 2025 for approximately 4 weeks. You will be away for the entire duration of the project. Exact dates will depend on medical clearances, notice periods, and flight availability.
Application Process
Due to the nature of working in Antarctica, the onboarding process is extensive. You will need to be available for phone and video interviews. You should also be willing to travel to Tauranga for medical and dental exams (flights provided if necessary). Comprehensive medical and dental exams, the costs of which will be covered by us, are required. Additionally, background and criminal record checks will be conducted.
Eligibility Criteria
Due to travel restrictions, we can only accept applications from New Zealand and US Citizens who have New Zealand or US passports and are currently living and working in New Zealand. Applicants must have a clean criminal record and a full Class 1 Driver’s Licence. The application process can be lengthy, so patience is essential as you navigate through it. Proficiency in IT, attention to detail, and the ability to manage complex paperwork are also necessary.
Important Application Notes
Please submit your applications through our online system only; we cannot accept applications via phone or email. Upon successful submission, you will receive an automatic confirmation email. If you do not receive this confirmation, it means your application was not received.
