About the Role
We are currently seeking a compassionate and skilled Hospital Play Specialist (HPS) to join our dedicated team at Waikato Hospital. In this fulfilling role, you will support children, young people, and their whānau as they navigate their healthcare experiences with confidence and resilience.
As a Hospital Play Specialist, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing therapeutic play and preparation to children undergoing medical procedures.
- Utilizing healthcare play to alleviate stress, anxiety, and fear, while helping children understand their care.
- Collaborating with our multidisciplinary team to ensure a child-centered, developmentally appropriate approach.
- Supporting whānau by offering guidance, reassurance, and strategies to enhance coping.
- Creating inclusive and engaging play environments that cater to emotional, developmental, and cultural needs.
- Contributing to education, documentation, and ongoing quality improvement within the service.
- Applying the early childhood Te Whariki curriculum to support the development and growth of children in a hospital setting.
- Committing to complete the Hospital Play Specialist Service Development programme and achieve HPSAANZ Registration within a designated timeframe.
About Hamilton
Waikato Hospital is a major regional teaching hospital located in Hamilton, New Zealand, serving as the regional hub for the Midland area, which includes the Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes, Tairawhiti, and Taranaki districts. About You
We are looking for candidates who possess:
- A recognized qualification as a Hospital Play Specialist, including a Diploma or Bachelor of Early Childhood Education with full Teacher Registration.
- Experience working with children, ideally in a healthcare or educational setting.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with children, whānau, and team members.
- A calm, flexible, and empathetic approach, especially in challenging or emotional situations.
- The capacity to reflect, adapt, and collaborate effectively as part of a supportive team.
- A commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and providing culturally safe practices.
- Competency in planning, documenting children's learning, curriculum design, and regular or emergent review.
