About the Role
We are excited to invite applications for the Ophthalmology Fellow position at the Canterbury Eye Service, located at Christchurch Hospital. This is a fixed-term, full-time role with a flexible start date. As part of our fifth-year fellowship program, you will have the opportunity to work in a region known for its vibrant lifestyle, culture, and stunning natural beauty.
In this role, you will gain exposure to a wide range of subspecialties, including medical retina, uveitis, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and anterior segment/corneal. If you aspire to work as a comprehensive ophthalmologist or wish to enhance your general ophthalmology skills, we can tailor the fellowship to suit your interests, allowing for a greater focus on areas such as anterior segment, glaucoma, or oculoplastics.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing care within a tertiary referral service to a population of over 700,000 across the South Island
- Performing regular unsupervised cataract surgery
- Accessing supervised subspecialty operating lists in your preferred areas
- Collaborating with RANZCO trainees and junior registrars
- Contributing to the acute eye service
- Participating in research opportunities within the department
About the Team
You will join the Canterbury Eye Department, a large and supportive team consisting of 13 consultants along with a skilled group of nurses, orthoptists, optometrists, ophthalmology assistants, and administrative staff. Our collaborative environment ensures that you will be well-supported throughout your fellowship.
About You
To be considered for this role, you should have:
- Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (please check your eligibility here)
- Previous ophthalmology experience, including surgical exposure, with at least 3-4 years of clinical ophthalmology experience and the ability to perform cataract surgery independently, including managing cataract complications
- A collaborative approach to working within a multidisciplinary environment
- A commitment to delivering patient-centered care
- An interest or experience in research, which would be advantageous
Benefits
As an Ophthalmology Fellow, your salary will align with the ASMS Senior Medical and Dental Officers Collective Agreement, recognizing your experience. You will also receive a generous Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance and support for research endeavors. The annual salary for this position is approximately $179,480.
