About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as the Second in Charge (2IC) at the Ashley Dene Research Development Station. This role will allow you to leverage your passion for farming, staff development, and research support in a leadership capacity.
In collaboration with the Farm Manager, you will drive operational excellence, mentor staff, and contribute to innovative research outcomes on our progressive dairy farm. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity that will enable you to make a meaningful impact in both commercial and research farming.
The Ashley Dene Research and Development Station is a 470-cow farm located in Springston, comprising approximately 200 hectares. We operate a 54-bale rotary milking shed and utilize two pivots and a lateral irrigator for irrigation. Our calving season occurs once a year in the spring.
Key tasks of the role include:
- Leading and motivating a team of three dairy farm assistants, while fostering a positive team culture
- Managing feeding systems, irrigation, and seasonal operations
- Supporting milking processes, hygiene, and milk quality standards
- Assisting with research trials and maintaining accurate records
- Operating and maintaining farm vehicles and machinery
- Ensuring compliance with environmental and health and safety regulations
This is a permanent position that requires an average commitment of 45 hours per week (1.0 FTE) on a 5/2 roster at the Ashley Dene Research Development Station in Springston. The total remuneration package starts at $86,000 per annum, depending on experience, which includes a base salary, accommodation allowance, and a clothing allowance of $520 per year. Please note that on-farm accommodation is not provided.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should have:
- At least three years of experience in dairy farming, preferably with large herds
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor junior staff
- Strong knowledge of stock management and animal welfare
- Confidence in making farm management decisions as needed
- Proficiency with farm applications and record-keeping
- Alignment with the values of Manaakitaka and Lincoln University
