Description
About the Company
At Trade Me, we are dedicated to connecting New Zealanders and helping them create the life they desire. Whether it involves significant milestones like finding a home, securing a job, or purchasing a vehicle, or smaller needs such as discovering the perfect bedside table or selling unwanted items, we aim to be the first place Kiwis turn to.
About the Role
We are currently expanding our Platform Engineering team and are looking to fill several Technical Product Owner positions. These roles offer immediate start dates and include one permanent position and two fixed-term positions (with the potential for extension to two years). The positions can be based in either Wellington or Auckland.
As a Technical Product Owner, you will play a vital leadership role, serving as a customer and product advocate within our Platform Engineering squads. You will take ownership of outcomes, ensuring that our teams focus on the right priorities, make informed trade-off decisions based on value and impact, and remain accountable for delivering results that positively influence our key metrics. This role will require you to collaborate closely with our teams to prioritize and refine the roadmap and backlog, manage dependencies, and maintain the overall health, resilience, and stability of our systems.
Responsibilities
In this role, you can expect to:
- Facilitate and foster a product-centric mindset to define the platform's goals and strategy, including guiding principles, outcomes, and opportunities.
- Build, maintain, and own a value-driven, flexible product roadmap that aligns with our platform strategy while managing complex dependencies and competing priorities.
- Serve as the main point of contact between the business and the squads, maximizing value and mitigating risk.
- Balance value, viability, feasibility, and usability while being accountable for the short-term roadmap and committed outcomes.
- Monitor, measure, and evaluate the health, performance, and user experience of your products, supporting and prioritizing continuous improvements.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need to bring:
- At least 5 years of experience leading Product Engineering teams in an agile development environment, with a solid understanding of product, design, and engineering practices.
- A proven track record of developing flexible, value-driven product roadmaps that clarify objectives, define opportunities, and deliver measurable results.
- A background in software development or testing, along with familiarity with the platforms essential for delivering customer value (such as web and mobile technologies, communication platforms, cloud platforms, and developer experience platforms) – preferred.
- A results-oriented mindset with a demonstrated ability to deliver outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, enabling you to convey ideas clearly, actively listen, and enhance team communication proactively.
Benefits
At Trade Me, we strive to create a rewarding work environment for our employees. Here are some of the benefits we offer:
- Flexibility: We embrace flexible working arrangements, encouraging our team to spend 60% of their time in the office, with the remainder being adaptable. We provide support for a comfortable home office setup and a utilities allowance.

- Learning: We are committed to your growth from Day 1, whether through on-the-job experiences, formal training, or mentoring.
