About the Role As a General Medicine Registrar, you will be an integral part of our general medicine team alongside Consultants, one House Officer, and another General Medicine Registrar. Your responsibilities will include caring for patients admitted to the ward, admitting new patients, and performing day stay procedures with appropriate supervision and training, such as chest drains, lumbar punctures, and ascitic procedures. Your work hours will be from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily, with longer shifts from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Night shifts will occur from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM, and weekend shifts (Saturday and Sunday) will be from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Nelson Hospital is accredited for rural hospital training, and we provide various certified rotations for training. Teaching is a significant aspect of our department, and you will be expected to participate actively in both receiving and providing education. Nelson offers an excellent opportunity to enhance your skills across various areas of medicine. With cardiology being the only other admitting specialty, you will gain exposure to a wide breadth of medical cases daily. You will also have the chance to perform procedures such as chest drains, lumbar punctures, and ascitic procedures under the guidance of experienced professionals. About the Team/Service/Location Our Nelson General Medical Team offers outstanding clinical experience in undifferentiated Acute Adult Medicine, supported by a dedicated Cardiology Team. Our General Physicians possess dual specialties and sub-specialty interests, including Endocrinology/Diabetes, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Oncology and Haematology, Renal Medicine and Intensive Care, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, and Neurology. While these specialties primarily focus on outpatient services, they provide invaluable support to the General Medical Admitting Team for inpatient sub-specialty advice and care. All registrars are expected to engage in outpatient clinics with their allocated supervising specialists, and we can accommodate specific clinical interests upon request.
