About the Role
We are seeking a Head Skipper with proven maritime experience and exceptional leadership skills to join our client's team. In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to lead a diverse fleet of vessels ranging from 8 meters to 18 meters, focusing on both Swimming with Dolphins and Nature Cruise experiences.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Skipping all vessels in the Akaroa fleet to deliver memorable dolphin and harbour cruise experiences.
- Providing engaging, educational, and entertaining commentary, supported by your onboard crew.
- Leading and mentoring a dynamic team of skippers and crew through hands-on training, coaching, and drills.
- Overseeing vessel readiness, safety, maintenance, and compliance in collaboration with Operations and Maintenance Managers.
- Driving operational excellence while contributing to cost-saving and revenue-generating initiatives.
- Supporting health and safety, environmental sustainability, and ensuring adherence to MNZ MOSS, DOC, and Qualmark standards.
- Representing and championing our company values within the community and tourism industry.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A current SRL Skipper's Qualification (24m with passenger endorsement) or equivalent.
- A valid First Aid Certificate and Full New Zealand Driver's Licence.
- Completion of the DOC SMART Operator Course or a willingness to complete it.
- Experience working with MOSS systems, vessel maintenance planning, and training delivery.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and hands-on approach.
- A passion for marine wildlife, storytelling, and sustainable tourism.
- Flexibility to work rostered hours, including weekends and public holidays, with occasional early starts or late finishes.
