About the Company
At Sanford, we take pride in our rich history of over 100 years in the seafood industry. We are passionate about what we do and are excited about our future. Our vision is to be a leader in New Zealand seafood, which we achieve through a values-driven approach that emphasizes care, passion, integrity, and collaboration in all our endeavors.
About the Role
We invite you to join our deep-water fleet, which consists of 12 fishing vessels that operate year-round from Cape Reinga to the Ross Sea. Our deep-sea vessels can be at sea for up to 12 weeks at a time, during which we catch, process, and package seafood onboard, delivering exceptional New Zealand seafood to tables around the world.
As the Skipper of one of Sanford's Scampi vessels, based in Timaru, you will play a crucial role in our operations. We foster a strong values-led culture, recognizing that our people are our most important asset. This position is rare within our industry, making it an exciting opportunity for existing Skippers seeking a new challenge or those aspiring to take the next step in their careers. This role operates on an Independent Contractor basis with a 6 weeks on - 6 weeks off rotation. Additionally, Sanford covers the return travel expenses from your hometown to Timaru.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for fishing within the designated quota area according to the voyage catch plan, making necessary adaptations with company approval. You will ensure compliance with all company regulations, New Zealand laws, and international conventions, maintaining high operational standards and meeting insurance requirements.
Your responsibilities also include appointing and supervising crew members in line with minimum crewing levels and company standards. It will be essential for you to ensure that all crew members are trained for efficient and safe operations. You will coordinate with the Vessel Manager regarding fuel, provisions, and fishing gear sourced from approved suppliers. Maintenance and repair of the vessel at sea will also fall under your purview, along with overseeing any necessary repairs during port visits.
You will operate the vessel continuously, weather permitting, to maximize both the quality and quantity of the catch while prioritizing the health, safety, and well-being of the crew. Maintaining daily communication with our shore-based team and keeping detailed logs and records to ensure compliance with company and legal requirements will also be key components of your role.
About You
We are looking for a candidate who is committed to ensuring the vessel operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with the law while maximizing catch quality and quantity. You should prioritize health and safety and demonstrate a strong commitment to the well-being of the crew. Your ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, coupled with a strong work ethic and initiative, will be essential for success in this role.
Strong communication skills will enable you to engage effectively at all levels of the operation. As a proven leader, you will be adept at managing a complex 24-hour operation and will be able to adapt quickly and positively to changes, guiding your team through transitions effectively.
