Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Health New Zealand - South Canterbury (Timaru Hospital)
South Island - New Zealand
Part Time 0.5 FTE - Generalist Role
About the Company
At Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, we are committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and strive to serve all New Zealanders. Our focus is on building a health system that emphasizes partnership, equity, sustainability, family-centered care, and excellence through integration and collaboration.
About the Role
We are currently inviting expressions of interest from generalist Orthopaedic Surgeons who may be interested in future opportunities at Timaru Hospital. Our team of five surgeons provides care for a 131-bed facility, supported by three Registrars, one of whom is in training. These Registrars handle first calls during normal business hours and on some weekends.
Our department adopts an interdisciplinary team approach, collaborating closely with physiotherapy services, which includes parallel clinics and in-house hand therapy. A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) assists with case management across our service, leading orthopaedic nurse-led clinics, arthroplasty monitoring, and complex casting support. The CNS also oversees elective list management and acute case scheduling.
About You
This generalist position requires the successful candidate to perform upper and lower limb procedures, manage general orthopaedic trauma, and carry out hip and knee arthroplasty. The role involves working in both theatre and outpatient clinics.
The position's full-time equivalent (FTE) is flexible and will primarily operate during standard business hours, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday. On-call duties are also required, with an after-hours roster frequency of approximately 1:5 to 1:6, covering weekends and Public Holidays.
