About the Company
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi while serving all New Zealanders. We are focused on creating an integrated and collaborative health system that emphasizes partnership, equity, sustainability, whanau-centred care, and excellence.
About the Role
We are excited to announce openings for the 2026 Training Year for Psychiatry Registrars in the Auckland Region, which includes Auckland, Waitemata, and Counties Manukau. Our Northern Region Psychiatry Training Programme, known as Hinengaro Akonga o Tokerau, is the largest of its kind in New Zealand and stands out among the best training programmes in both Australia and New Zealand.
This programme offers a unique and comprehensive range of training experiences that are not available elsewhere in Australasia. Our graduates often secure local employment following their fellowship, ensuring a smooth transition into their professional careers. With a dedicated team that has trained both locally and internationally in the last decade, we provide a supportive and well-rounded training environment.
Trainees receive guidance from the Director of Training, local Training Facilitators, and Consultant Psychiatrist Supervisors throughout each rotation. This robust support system is designed to help trainees thrive both professionally and personally.
Living in Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, offers a remarkable lifestyle that balances modern conveniences with natural beauty. The city boasts a mix of urban life, lush forests, stunning beaches, and picturesque coastal walkways. Auckland’s vibrant gastronomic scene enhances both your personal and professional experiences. Recognized as the world's most liveable city in 2021, Auckland continues to rank highly for its quality of life.
Why Train as a Psychiatry Registrar in the Auckland Region
Our training programme provides a variety of unique experiences that are rare in Australia and New Zealand. These include:
- Cultural immersion through rotations focused on Māori and Pacific Island mental health.
- Specialised areas such as paediatric consultation liaison psychiatry, maternal mental health, forensic psychiatry, intellectual disability, medical administration, and clinical leadership.
- Academic opportunities in collaboration with the University of Auckland.
We have a comprehensive training framework that includes:
- Weekly face-to-face meetings for teaching, fostering strong relationships with peers and dedicated academics.
- A mentoring programme with excellent supervisory support.
- Weekly protected teaching days during the university semester.
- A dedicated cultural teaching day that addresses Pasifika, Asian, and Māori mental health.
- Advanced training opportunities in various RANZCP sub-specialty Certificates.
- Access to well-managed and funded Psychotherapy Written Case resources and strong RANZCP examination pass rates.
Additionally, trainees will benefit from close ties with the University of Auckland, engaging with leading researchers and accessing mentorship and academic support in mental health and addictions.
