Description
About the Company
At Greater Wellington, we are dedicated to preserving and enhancing our natural environment. We recognize that New Zealand is experiencing an increase in exotic plant species that threaten our native flora and disrupt our regional parks and productive lands. Our Pest Plant Team is committed to addressing these challenges with enthusiasm and professionalism from our Upper Hutt Office.
About the Role
We are currently seeking a permanent, full-time Biosecurity Officer to join our Pest Plant Team. In this role, you will play a key part in executing Greater Wellington's Regional Pest Management Plan, focusing on the survey and control of pest plants in some of our region's most valuable biodiversity sites. Your work will entail conducting surveys in both urban and rural settings, targeting pest plants identified in the Regional Pest Management Plan. You will also be responsible for implementing control measures to eradicate these infestations.
In addition to fieldwork, you will provide advice to the public on effective weed control methods, biocontrol agents, and general biosecurity practices. Collaboration with Manaaki Whenua will be essential, as you will engage in the monitoring, release, and transfer of biocontrol agents within our region.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should be self-motivated, possess a good level of physical fitness, and be comfortable working outdoors. The following qualifications are required:
- A tertiary degree in ecology, biosecurity, biodiversity, or a related field, and/or a minimum of three years of experience in pest management or conservation.
- Strong identification skills for both native and exotic plant species.
- Ability to handle and apply hazardous substances, with the capacity to obtain necessary certifications.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; experience with GPS and GIS systems is an advantage.
- A strong work ethic with the ability to collaborate in a small team while also working independently.
- A current full driver's license is essential; LUV riding experience is a plus.
Benefits
We offer a flexible working policy that supports your lifestyle and family commitments. You will have access to various learning and development opportunities, internal secondments, and clear paths for career progression.
Your well-being is our priority. We provide medical and trauma insurance, support through our employee assistance program—including access to Rongoā Māori partner providers—along with Tangihanga leave and support. We strive to create an inclusive environment where you can express your personal and cultural identity.
Our organization values a friendly and inclusive culture, with opportunities to engage in social clubs and staff networks. You will work in beautiful environments across our region, contributing to the preservation and growth of our natural heritage.
Joining our team means committing to meaningful work that restores nature, connects communities, and supports the prosperity of our rohe. We collaborate with mana whenua and community members who share our vision for the future of this region.
