About the Role
As a Trainee Signals Technician or Maintainer, you will be responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of KiwiRail’s signalling assets. This role is essential to the safe operation of our rail services. You will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced technicians, receiving hands-on training that will help you develop your skills in electrical, mechanical, and safety-critical systems.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing signalling equipment.
- Reading and interpreting electrical and mechanical diagrams.
- Using specialized tools to diagnose and rectify faults.
- Ensuring compliance with KiwiRail’s safety and engineering standards.
- Traveling to different sites as necessary to support the network.
This is a dynamic hands-on role where no two days are the same, and you will be a crucial part of a team dedicated to keeping New Zealand moving.
Requirements
We are looking for team players who demonstrate a strong work ethic and a commitment to safety.
Please note that a Trainee Signals Technician will need to hold a valid EWRB Licence; however, this is not a requirement for a Trainee Signals Maintainer.
Essential qualifications include:
- A strong focus on safety and attention to detail.
- Physical fitness to work in a hands-on, outdoor environment.
- The ability to work collaboratively within a team and follow instructions.
- NCEA Level 1 in Maths, English, and Science (or equivalent).
- A full Class 1 driver’s license.
- A willingness to learn and complete training courses.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Experience in electrical, mechanical, or laboring work.
- A full Class 2 driver’s license.
- A current first aid/CPR certificate.
This role offers structured training with opportunities for progression as you gain experience and complete qualifications.
