About the Role
We are seeking a Head of Nursing to lead our largest academic portfolio and ensure the delivery of high-quality nursing education. This role places you at the forefront of vocational education, where you will oversee programmes that align with both national and international nursing standards. As a member of our faculty leadership team, you will cultivate relationships with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and other stakeholders in the health sector to ensure that Ara's nursing qualifications meet accreditation requirements and industry expectations.
The Nursing portfolio serves as a flagship offering at Ara, encompassing the Bachelor of Nursing programme, enrolled nursing courses, and various sub-degree training opportunities. This role is crucial in contributing to the Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct and in strengthening partnerships with various stakeholders to meet the health workforce training needs of the Canterbury region.
As the incoming Head of Nursing, you will have the opportunity to engage with learners and enhance their outcomes, while also supporting the integration of kaupapa and mātauranga Māori in line with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Together, we aim to transform lives through education.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in nursing or a health-related field
- Registered Nurse with a current practicing certificate from the Nursing Council of New Zealand
Experience:
- Significant experience in nursing, nursing education, academic leadership, and qualification development
- Strong knowledge of the New Zealand vocational education sector, including the Nursing Council's accreditation and regulatory requirements
- Proven ability to engage health sector stakeholders and build strategic partnerships
- Experience in leading teams, managing budgets, and implementing quality improvement initiatives
- Commitment to equity, inclusivity, and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in education and healthcare
- Familiarity with contemporary learning technologies, digital platforms, and innovative teaching methodologies
- Expertise in overseeing and implementing projects and programmes
- Understanding of adult learning principles, assessment methodologies, and quality assurance frameworks
- Proven ability to plan, budget, negotiate, and manage resources effectively
- Strong administrative and management skills in complex environments
- Experience in fostering partnerships with industry, community, and iwi-Māori
- Ability to critically assess existing processes and standards while advocating for necessary changes
- Commitment to continuous improvement in all activities
- Proficient in technology, with strong digital literacy in Office systems and the ability to learn and adapt to Ara-specific electronic systems
- Understanding of health and safety management practices
- Excellent report writing skills, with an awareness of different audiences and writing styles
