About the Role We invite you to explore our mussel farming division, situated in some of New Zealand's most breathtaking locations. Our operations are conducted in pristine waters, which provide ideal conditions for cultivating Greenshell Mussels. We utilize advanced vessels for seeding, maintenance, and harvest, and our operations are supported by rigorous monitoring and testing. This position is based on Stewart Island and reports directly to the Mussel Farms Manager. As a Senior Deckhand, you will assist the skipper in training and directing the crew on deck. Your responsibilities will include executing various duties that ensure a steady supply of mussels to the Havelock Processing Plant for sale and distribution. Responsibilities - Train and provide direction to the crew on deck - Assist the skipper with daily operational tasks - Participate in harvesting, reseeding, and seeding of spat - Maintain lines and equipment - Perform any additional duties as required by management About You We are seeking a candidate with a solid background in deck work, preferably within aquaculture or marine environments. Hands-on experience with line handling, equipment operation, and basic maintenance is essential. Familiarity with mussel harvesting techniques is advantageous. You should be comfortable working efficiently as part of a team and adaptable to varying weather conditions. A strong focus on safety and an understanding of maritime protocols are critical. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, reliability, and the physical stamina to manage demanding tasks. A proactive attitude and flexibility will be key to your success in this role. What We're Looking For - Effective communication skills to engage with both crew and management, including reporting issues and relaying operational plans - Good physical condition, as the job can be physically demanding, particularly during adverse weather or peak farming periods - Leadership abilities to guide the crew, make decisions in challenging conditions, and oversee vessel and farm operations - Thorough understanding of maritime safety, local fishing and farming regulations, and environmental standards - Familiarity with mussel farming techniques, including seeding and harvesting (preferred but not essential) - Resourcefulness and the ability to make quick decisions in adverse conditions, including troubleshooting equipment or adapting to weather changes Benefits At Sanford, we offer a wealth of opportunities within our diverse team of over 1,500 individuals, including roles in remote locations such as the seas surrounding Antarctica.
