About the Role
We are currently seeking an experienced and dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our Specialist Chemistry section within the Specialist Service team at Canterbury Health Laboratories.
In this role, you will deliver high-quality laboratory science services, which include the collection, preparation, investigation, and analysis of human biological samples. Your work will support the diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients. You will operate within your scope of practice as defined by the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, ensuring that every test and process contributes to excellent patient outcomes and the promotion of equitable health across our communities.
Key Responsibilities
Professional Practice and Development
You will maintain professional competence and commit to continuous learning through ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) and development planning. Active participation in training, conferences, and professional development discussions with your Section Head is expected. You will uphold the highest professional and ethical standards while contributing to a supportive and collaborative team environment.
Laboratory Operations
In this role, you will perform a wide range of routine and specialist laboratory tests and analyses. You will conduct both manual and automated assays across various sample types with accuracy and efficiency. Troubleshooting test and equipment issues as needed will be part of your responsibilities. Additionally, you will ensure accurate data entry in the Laboratory Information System, including patient registration and results management, and support the maintenance of IANZ accreditation to ISO 15189 by contributing to quality initiatives and audits.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement

Essential Requirements
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain high professional standards and meet competence requirements for MLS practitioners.
- A strong understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its significance in healthcare.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- A strong sense of professional integrity and personal responsibility.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working within an IANZ-accredited medical laboratory.
- Proven experience in specialist laboratory disciplines.
- Familiarity with HPLC or LC-MSMS.
