About the Role
We are currently seeking a Trades Assistant to join our Maintenance Engineering Team in Greymouth. This full-time, permanent position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week. In this role, you will play a key part in keeping our Health New Zealand West Coast facilities running smoothly and safely. You will support essential services throughout our district, ensuring that our buildings, systems, and environments are well-maintained for the benefit of patients, staff, and visitors.
As a Trades Assistant, you will collaborate with technical staff and contribute to the performance, safety, and reliability of our health facilities. Your responsibilities will include maintenance, repairs, inspections, and upgrades across a variety of building services and essential plant systems. This position is ideal for a proactive, adaptable, and practical individual who is eager to learn within a dynamic 24/7 healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Team, Culture, and Communication
- Support a collaborative and engaged Maintenance Engineering team.
- Understand and contribute to the district's goals and service priorities.
- Promote a positive and safety-first work culture.
- Maintain clear communication with colleagues, managers, and wider health services.
Maintenance and Repairs
- Assist with the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems across Health New Zealand sites.
- Support building services, including HVAC, water systems, compressed air, medical gases, and reticulated systems.
- Perform maintenance on building structures, fabric, and finishes as necessary.
- Ensure facilities are well-maintained and functioning to a high standard.
- Provide backup for grounds maintenance, including lawns and spraying.
Inspections and Planned Work
- Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, and monitoring of plant rooms and systems.
- Assist with the installation, upgrades, and replacement of building services and equipment.
- Follow Maintenance Engineering Standards and Operational Procedures.
- Carry out Planned, Condition, and Defect maintenance tasks.
Safety Compliance
- Adhere to Health and Safety policies at all times.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and promote safe working practices.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Requisition parts and materials as needed.
- Participate in emergency response and on-call rosters.

- Awareness of how maintenance work impacts patient services.
- Experience supporting a 24/7 operating environment.
- Flexibility and willingness to quickly adapt to changing tasks.
