About the Role
The Senior Systems Engineer (Infrastructure) will provide technical subject matter expertise across our virtual infrastructure, public cloud platforms, and other core systems that support the university's business functions.
In this role, you will contribute to the development of technology standards, guidelines, and strategies for your domain. You will collaborate across teams to ensure a cohesive approach to infrastructure services. Additionally, you will provide technical leadership within the Infrastructure team, balancing standard operations with innovation and optimizing systems through automation.
What You Will Do
- Support the Principal Engineer in the design, provisioning, operation, security, and management of infrastructure systems.
- Ensure service availability and lead improvements using both existing and emerging technologies.
- Maintain the security and privacy of users and systems.
- Enhance user experiences through effective sourcing, implementation, and automation.
- Provide high-quality technical advice and leadership.
- Support strategic alignment through change initiatives.
- Collaborate with various teams to achieve shared goals and strategic objectives.
Who You Are
- You possess a tertiary qualification in IT, business management, or have equivalent experience.
- You have at least five years of experience in a senior engineering or related role, with a focus on physical and virtual infrastructure, public cloud platforms, and enterprise-scale data storage systems.
- You have experience working in large, complex environments with hybrid infrastructure that includes both cloud and on-premises components.
- You understand strategic IT issues, particularly within educational or government contexts.
- You have proven ability to build strong stakeholder relationships and contribute effectively to projects.
- You are comfortable with ambiguity and can adapt to a changing environment.
- You are familiar with incident, problem, change, release, and capacity management processes.

- The salary range for this position is $80,894 – $113,805 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
This is a full-time position, preferably based at our Palmerston North campus. We are also open to remote candidates who can be onsite 1–2 days per week.
