About the Role
We are seeking dedicated medical professionals to join our emergency department, which consists of 15 beds and treats approximately 18,000 patients annually. Our department is supported by 24/7 laboratory and radiology services, including CT imaging. You will be part of a dynamic team that includes rural specialists, emergency medical officers, and emergency specialists, all working together to assess, treat, transfer, or admit patients requiring acute care.
Our medical roster ensures Senior Medical Officer (SMO) coverage around the clock, allowing you to thrive in a fast-paced environment where collaborative team work is essential. Currently, we offer 10-hour shifts within the department.

About Thames
Thames Hospital is a modern 50-bed secondary care facility that offers a wide range of services, including an emergency department, inpatient care, day surgery, an infusion unit, rehabilitation services, a birthing unit, and low-acuity mental health care. With round-the-clock laboratory and radiology services, including advanced CT imaging, we are well-equipped to meet our patients' needs.
As an accredited training hub, we support medical students from Auckland University, as well as PGY2 House Officers and registrars in both Rural Hospital Medicine and General and Acute Care Medicine. Our commitment to professional development includes a robust quality improvement program, continuing medical education opportunities, and an RMO teaching program. We are also expanding our telehealth services, which enhance inpatient care and outpatient clinics, including emergency services like stroke thrombolysis.
Situated in the heart of the Coromandel, Thames is a picturesque town rich in history and natural beauty. The area features a unique blend of colonial architecture, a vibrant arts scene, and a deep cultural heritage, including Maori history and the town's gold mining background. About You
We invite applications from Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine or the Division of Rural Hospital Medicine, or those with an equivalent overseas qualification. Medical officers with relevant experience in emergency medicine will also be considered. Candidates must be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
